Unlike our earthly self, which seeks happiness, success, and security, the soul longs to create in the material world and to grow. Yet this growth unfolds only along the vertical dimension of Spirit, which we enter only when our earthly desires are frustrated – when we suffer and experience our own helplessness.
There is a thought from Carl G. Jung that describes this precisely:
“Every psychic advance of man arises from the suffering of the soul.”
